Building a Composable Multiselect React Component
When we started working on Origin UI – our extensive collection of copy-and-paste components – we received numerous requests to create a multiple select component, which is typically not included in the popular Shadcn collection.
We explored various possibilities, including using the excellent React-Select component. Ultimately, we decided to create our own version of the component, largely based on a Shadcn extension. This component was created by Ryan Chou, utilizing the Command component in Shadcn, which is itself based on cmdk.
The result is a composable component with numerous useful options, such as:
- Showing badges inside or outside the select
- Allowing option creation when no results are found
- Implementing async search with debounce
- Seamless integration with react-hook-form
